Bite converts the official Nutri-Score points (the underlying numeric score behind the A-E letter) into a simple 0-100 Bite Score. Lower Nutri-Score points mean a better Bite Score. We do not add extra penalties or bonuses. Bite focuses purely on nutritional quality per Nutri-Score.

1) What is Nutri-Score (in one minute)?

Nutri-Score is a science-based front-of-pack label used in several European countries. It calculates a numeric score per 100 g/100 mL by balancing:

  • “Negative” components: energy (kJ), sugars, saturated fat, sodium
  • “Positive” components: fiber, protein, % fruits/vegetables/legumes/nuts (and certain oils)

Then it does:

Total = Negative - Positive

There are special cases for cheese, added fats, and beverages. The final numeric result is mapped to letters A-E (A = best).

Note: The Nutri-Score algorithm was refined by the European Scientific Committee in 2022-2023, with gradual implementation beginning March 2025 in France. Bite follows the official method as it rolls out.

2) How Bite converts Nutri-Score points to a 0-100 Bite Score

After computing the Nutri-Score numeric points, Bite applies this fixed lookup:

Nutri-Score pointsBite Score

-190

175
270
365
460

181
>= 190

Interpretation rules:

  • We cap excellent products at 100 (any score <= -2).
  • We floor very poor results at 0 (any score >= 19).
  • All integers in between map exactly as shown.

3) Examples

  • High-fiber, low-sugar whole-grain cereal -> Nutri-Score points around 2-3 -> Bite approx. 65-70.
  • Sugary biscuit -> points around 9-11 -> Bite approx. 30-35 (or 15 at 11).
  • Plain unsweetened yogurt (often favorable protein/fat balance) -> negative/low points -> Bite 80-100 (depending on exact composition).

Your exact Bite Score depends on the numeric Nutri-Score points produced from the product’s nutrition facts.

4) FAQ

Do beverages use the same Nutri-Score calculation?

Nutri-Score has specific rules for beverages (and for cheese/added fats). Bite uses the official numeric points those rules produce, then applies the same mapping table above.

Will Bite change when Nutri-Score updates?

Yes. Bite follows the official Nutri-Score methodology; as countries adopt the 2023 updates (rollout in France from March 2025), Bite stays aligned.

Are you affiliated with Nutri-Score?

No. Nutri-Score is an official public-health labeling system; Bite uses its numeric points to compute Bite’s 0-100 display.
